CNA classes are an attractive option for people who want to enter the field of nursing in a relatively short period of time and make a real difference in the lives of others. When compared to the time and cost it takes to earn an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s in nursing, CNA training programs offer a much more affordable and accelerated path to working in the healthcare field.
Certified nursing assistants work under the direction of registered nurses and physicians, acting in a basic caregiving capacity and providing support to nursing staff. They generally perform routine tasks such as feeding, bathing, and dressing patients, as well as more specialized duties like collecting blood samples and taking vital signs.
Texas Nurse Aide Training & Competency Evaluation Programs
In the state of Texas, CNA classes are referred to as “nurse aide training and competency evaluation programs”. These programs must be approved by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and meet certain minimum requirements.
Certified nurse aide training programs are offered at local community colleges and vocational-technical schools. Most programs take about four to twelve weeks to complete and include a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on medical training in a laboratory or clinical setting.
Nurse Aide Program Requirements
The goal of a nurse aide training program (NATCEP) is to prepare students for the rigors of the job so that they can provide high-quality care to patients. As such, the curriculum focuses on topics relevant to the duties of a nurse aide, including basic patient care, infection control, medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, safety and emergency procedures, and patient rights.
Students also get the opportunity to develop their skills by practicing them in a simulated work environment or through clinical rotations in a real medical facility. Hospitals, nursing homes, and other care facilities partner with a NATCEP to offer clinical training to students enrolled in the program. These clinical experiences help students gain real-world experience and develop a sense of what it’s like to work as a nurse aide.
HHS-Established Curriculum
Texas Health and Human Services have established a curriculum that all NATCEPs must follow. This ensures that all certified nurse aides in Texas have received the same basic education and minimum clock hours of training to become a CNA, though many programs offer additional training beyond the minimum requirements.
Each nurse aide training program must provide a minimum of 100 clock hours of training, including 60 hours of classroom instruction that does not involve direct resident care and 40 hours of hands-on clinical training in a nursing facility. Each NATCEP must teach the curriculum established by HHS, including training in the following areas:
Basic Nursing Skills
A CNA program covers various topics related to basic nursing skills to ensure that students are properly prepared for their roles as patient care providers. Students learn how to take vital signs, how to assist with ambulation and transfers, bathing and grooming, how to monitor food intake and hygiene, and how to properly document patient information.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
Good communication skills are essential for a certified nurse aide. In a health care setting, effective communication is vital to preventing errors, providing quality care, and maintaining a positive work environment. In CNA classes, students are trained in professional communication, active listening, and other interpersonal skills that will help them succeed in their careers.
Infection Control
All health care workers must be aware of the risk of infection and take precautions to prevent the spread of disease. In CNA classes, students learn about standard precautions, including hand-washing, sterilization guidelines, the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and response protocols in the event of exposure to infectious material.
Personal Care Skills
Nurse aides complete basic care tasks and provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) that keep a person healthy and functional. CNA classes cover topics such as oral care, bathing, shaving, hair care, nutrition, and assisting patients with toileting. These responsibilities are often performed for elderly or disabled patients who are unable to complete these tasks on their own.
Promoting Resident’s Independence
Studies have shown that participating in activities and having a sense of purpose can meaningfully improve the physical and mental health of nursing home residents. Mobility helps maintain physical function and independence, while social interaction can help reduce depression, anxiety, and the risk of agitation. The role of a nurse assistant is to encourage residents to be as active and independent as possible while providing the necessary support and assistance.
Respecting Resident’s Rights
No matter what the setting, all patients have certain rights that must be respected. In CNA training, students learn about the federal and state laws that protect patients’ rights, as well as the ethical and moral principles that guide the health care profession. Rights to privacy, dignity, respect, and independence are emphasized, as well as the importance of maintaining the physical, psychosocial, and mental well-being of residents in accordance with their written plan of care.
Safety and Emergency Procedures
As a front-line health care worker, a certified nursing assistant must be able to recognize signs of distress and know how to respond appropriately in an emergency. CNA training includes instruction includes scenario-based simulations to prepare students for the common safety and medical emergencies they may encounter on the job. Topics covered include responding to a choking patient, what to do if a patient is unconscious, and how to handle a fall, among others.

Find a State Approved CNA Program
There are approximately 894 state-approved nursing assistant training providers in the State of Texas. To become an approved partner of the NATCEP, a nursing facility must meet the requirements to be a clinical site, which includes being properly licensed and having the necessary staff and equipment to provide quality training.
Approved clinical sites must also have an agreement with an educational institution that offers the approved curriculum and has been licensed by the Texas Department of Health Services (DHS). The following is a list of approved CNA programs in the state of Texas.
